The Side of Veterinary Care You Don’t See

With the recent CMA investigation into the veterinary industry making headlines, there’s been a lot of talk about pricing and transparency. While these are important conversations, I wanted to take a moment to share another side of the story — one that rarely makes the news.

Because behind every consultation fee or treatment cost are genuine, hard-working veterinary professionals who dedicate their lives to caring for animals.

In my ten years as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible teams. What I’m sharing here is based on my own personal experience — what I’ve seen first-hand in the practices I’ve worked in. While every workplace is different, the common thread I’ve found is compassion, dedication, and a deep love for animals.

The Care That Happens Behind the Scenes

When an animal is admitted to the practice, it’s not just about medicine and monitoring — it’s about comfort, compassion, and understanding.

We make sure every patient has a soft, clean bed and a calm environment to recover in. For long-stay patients, we add extra enrichment and comfort touches.

One of my favourite examples is a lovely Maine Coon called Kenny, who stayed with us for his entire FIP treatment. Because of the distance between his owner’s home and the referral hospital, Kenny became part of the family. He had his own room where he could stretch his legs, the toys he loved, his preferred litter, and his favourite “bird-watching” videos on YouTube. His absolute favourite? The digital fish game — watching him paw at the screen never failed to make us smile.

These moments may sound small, but they make all the difference to a patient’s recovery — and to us, too.

The Emotional Side of Veterinary Work

What many people don’t see is that vets and nurses don’t stop caring when they go home.

I’ve known vets who spend hours of their own time researching treatment options, discussing cases with colleagues, and even losing sleep worrying about their patients. It’s not just a job — it’s a calling.

When we do get a rare quiet moment, it’s not spent idly. You’ll often find us giving patients a cuddle, a gentle brush, or a quick play session in the garden. These one-on-one moments help animals feel more at ease — and they remind us why we do what we do.

Individual Care for Every Patient

Every patient is unique, which means every treatment plan is, too. We tailor medication schedules to balance medical needs with rest, making sure each animal has the best chance to heal in comfort.

During quieter times, we often play classical music to help patients relax. If an animal is particularly anxious, we adapt their space — adding calming sprays to bedding, creating hidey holes for cats, or draping a blanket over their kennel door for a sense of security.

We also spend time getting to know each pet’s personality. We’ll ask owners about favourite foods, preferred commands, or little quirks that make their pet feel safe. Some cats are “social eaters” — they won’t touch their food unless someone is sitting with them. So, we sit with them. Sometimes we hand-feed them, sometimes we warm up their food, all in the hope of seeing that little tail flick or first bite.

Again, this is based on what I’ve personally seen and experienced in the practices I’ve worked with — and I know many teams across the country share the same level of dedication and heart.

More Than Medicine

There’s so much that happens behind the scenes in every veterinary practice that clients never see. These are the quiet moments of care, the small acts of kindness, and the emotional investment that go far beyond any invoice or treatment plan.

So, while the current conversations around the CMA and veterinary pricing are valid and necessary, it’s also important to remember that for most of us, this profession isn’t about profit — it’s about passion.

Every patient we treat, comfort, and nurture reminds us why we chose this career. Because for vets and nurses alike, it’s never “just a job” — it’s a lifelong commitment to the animals who depend on us.
